I loved everything about this book! I loved Darius! I loved his whole family, even his (sometimes) asshole dad. I adored Sohrab! I wanted to try every item of food described (even though I read this while having a nasty stomach bug...that's how good the food sounded!) I love that I learned a lot about a country and culture I knew very little about! I LOVE how it dealt with depression and grief. Honestly, I just love this book! Highly recommend!

A really sweet and moving story. Easy to read and some wonderful depictions of Iranian culture (I want to investigate some of the foods!). We follow the main character through a fairly emotional journey as he connects with family he's never met and a culture that is almost alien to him. I will probably check out the sequel next year.

This book made me cry, and for someone who can't really afford tears, that is something.
I was not expecting it whatsoever as I started reading this book blind.
Just well done.
I saw there is a second one and now I gotta put it on my list for after I get through the books I have in front of me.

Mostly, this book made me want to get some Persian food. I think it could've used an appendix at the back to sort it all out so we'd know where to get recipes and hunt down restaurants because there was a lot of it. Probably should've also had a disclaimer that while it is very good, Mamou's is the best, actually. But otherwise it was great!

Listened on Libby. Persian high schooler from Portland, travels to Iran to visit relatives and makes a new friend. Directly addresses depression and cultural differences in mental health. I thought Darius was a very relatable character. I liked the reader.

I listened to the audiobook, so I struggled a little with the names and Farsi words. Overall, I enjoyed learning about Persian culture and mental illness.
