I’m actually giving this 4.75/5 stars!
I am so glad that I can say that I’ve FINALLY read this. Fangirl is like my ultimate favorite contemporary so the fact that this was the fan fiction from it turned into an actual novel you’d think I’d have read this like immediately. I hate that it took me forever to actually pick this up. I will just say I was nervous to actually read it but after my last reread of Fangirl I said, fuck it. I’m ready for this.
I’ve got to say I LOVED this. I wish I could give it the extra quarter star but the first like 50 pages reminded me WAY too much of Harry Potter and it took awhile to get through them but I’m glad I pushed past because I absolutely loved it.
Yes, it’s got hints toward Harry Potter sure. But Rainbow Rowell really created a different story with this. We see such an interesting story and such great characters and I just really loved this.
I swoon for Simon and Baz. SWOON. I just can’t with the cuteness overload.
I’m very glad this got to be my first read of 2019. And I’m so excited to see what Wayward Son is going to bring to this! I want a release date!!

Wasn’t a huge fan of the writing style or story, but the magic system was interesting. Definitely meant for younger audiences and had positive queer relationships. Did not live the constantly changing POVs. It was a few too many people to keep track of and sometimes I’d have to flip back to remind myself whose POV I was reading.
I can't finish it. I'd like to think that I did try--I got to 7% of it (cringing all the while) before I decided I'm wasting my time and am better off looking for a different book.
I couldn't stop comparing it to Harry Potter! AND I've only ever read ONE chapter of Harry Potter. So that's, like ?????????? HOW could ONE chapter ruin me like this??? I can't even.
The author just couldn't excite me. It just felt like the book was TRYING to telling me, 'ooooooooooooh such mystery! what could it be?????? aren't you just DYING to find out!' but I was just like, '.....I guess?' It just couldn't hype me up.
I'm really disappointed because its whole premise was interesting to me, and it had a lot of 'It was amazing!' reviews, but it just flopped. Like, I don't know.. it felt like the author was too excited to get to the real plot or whatever and had set the stage way too fast. I mean, instead of giving us an experience, it felt like the whole book might be, 'So here's the castle, here's a castle full of mages, here's a prophecy, etcetera ETCETERA, AND THEN (the real plot)..' do you get me?
This is the 2nd book written by Rainbow Rowell that I've dropped. It's such a shame, because I LOVE the covers of her books, that it always makes me want to pick it up! But now I suppose I should steer clear of her.
