Loved this read. A classic for a reason, but honestly even better than I’d imagined it would be.

This is a cartographer’s dream. Alas, I am not a cartographer.

In all seriousness, while I respect the depth of Tolkien’s craft (and the fact that he gave birth to modern fantasy), I cannot help my eyes glazing over after I hear about the fourth set of hills and valleys or the millionth description of where the wind is coming from and what the sun looks like. I never like setting descriptions when I read, and it was tedious to get through here, especially pre-Rivendell. I personally feel that strong world-building does not require constant descriptions of the exact path characters must walk every day. There were glimmers in the story and mood that caught my eye, but in general, the writing didn’t appeal to me and was a labor to complete.
