After reading the Alienist with great appreciation (it's hard to say enjoyment when the topic of the novel is so disturbing), I continued immediately to Angel of Darkness. Although it seemed much, much too long, with some fairly outrageous "deus ex machina" moments, what began to trouble me was not those features of the narrative but the sense of a substantial underlying misogyny required in order to perpetuate the logic of both novels. While "Miss Howard" is a very interesting character, whose pluck and intelligence I appreciate, I am troubled by the pattern within the two books that suggest that love and meaningful relationships are generally impossible.

Fun to read but long. The details of old NYC are interesting and I love how Roosevelt makes an appearance toward the end.

I wish that I could give half stars or fractions of stars - this book would be a 4.5. I enjoyed it just as much as The Alienist, perhaps a bit more. I think that period pieces are very fun reads, and the story was engrossing. If you enjoyed the Alienist, I would recommend this as well.

"After all, a man who makes his children of secondary or even minor importance, though he may be criticized by some, is hardly held to be unusual. Why should we believe any differently of a woman?”

This was a wonderful but long and twisted story. It was wonderful to learn more about the characters and to jump in time, but I didn't like Moore as much in this one as I had in the last. It was interesting learning things from Stevie's POV. He had a definite different way about viewing the world and sometimes it took me a moment or two to remember that.

As to the case and how it progresses, it was a sad case - and one that wasn't always easy to read but I did enjoy it and can't wait for the next in the series!
