Prequels to the Series of Unfortunate Events, these share the DNA of those books but have their own identity too, with a bit more of a mystery/whodunnit vibe. The first book, in particular, is a lot of fun, and I especially enjoyed the sense of camaraderie among the gradually expanding group of friends/mystery solvers. Ellington Feint and Moxie Mallahan are particularly great characters. As with the Unfortunate Events, the mystery is never really solved, and the last book (much like The End) is a bit underwhelming, but it is more about the journey than the destination with Snicket, I suppose.
