Having seen this one pop up on my goodreads feed a few times today....my interest was piqued.

This is a short but sweet story of a an adolescent Towles who inherits his great grandfathers hatbox, and gains from its leather sides, embossed gold monogram and ocean liner stamps the inspiration to write ‘A Gentleman In Moscow’.

Imagining all the places his great grandfather travelled to with his hatbox enabled him to conjure the idea of the grand hotel in Moscow in which his story is set.

Towles also manages to thread in his own experiences with travel...very different from his great grandfather’s in that he is always the businessman and never the traveler. His experiences I’m sure will resonate with many.

All in all a fascinating little insight into the author’s inspiration for his major hit book. I havent read it, but I’m sure that any one who has and enjoyed it will enjoy reading this short article on it’s beginnings.
