Dropping a star on a re read. Mostly because of the stunted dialog and weirdness regarding witches. Also for animal cruelty. Beyond that, this covers a lot of ground but the characters are weirdly flattened out. There's generally too paraphrasing, rarely do characters actual talk.
Certainly a book of unique voice and a tale well-spun. Love the geography of Earthsea—somehow both intimate and vast. I was surprised Le Guin had little to say on gender in this book considering some of her other work, which she acknowledges in the afterword, but I will venture into Earthsea again.

it took me a while to finally read this book, i had tried once before and never made it past the fourth chapter. it is a slow book and though it is clearly both inspired by the tropes of the fantasy genre and has inspired some of its own, it is unlike anything i have read. as le guin herself has said, this, unlike so much of the fantasy genre, is not about any kind of war, and maybe bc of that, the action is almost unrecognizable, the stakes and the pace are so completely different than you expect. this book is quite good and if you have the willingness to keep at it, you will love it.

Really interesting! I never thought I could enjoy something so heavily informed by medieval/romantic literature. Quiet but compelling.
