A Wizard of Earthsea is a classic for a reason. Its a book where after every chapter you could sit and analize for some time. The story itself is also interesting as it tackles the great skills of Ged but the hubris he has because of them and its consequence. As well as being introspective into our protagonist's mind. Characters other than Sparrowhawk are a bit basic and dont offer much but they are each different enough to not feel boring. The prose is also nice though I can't quite find the words to describe it.
However, this book is a bit of a rough read. My copy, though I imagine many others are the same, had fairly small font making this pocket sized book incredibly dense in terms of words per page which made it harder to read at night when I was tired and kept rereading the same lines three times on accident. Besides the physical aspect the book moves incredibly quickly through Ged's life to a point that is a bit jarring as other series and authors would have taken a longer time with some things Ursula K. Leguin does away in a few lines. Still very well done but I can't help but feel like I would've enjoyed a bit more time for some scenes. Still I'll continue reading the series later and I can't wait to see what Earthsea has to offer.

I've been trying to understand why I loved this book so much, rather than just calling it entertaining and well-written. For starters, I didn't have long to consider it, because the book is deliciously short, and so easy to read, despite being full of brand new names and concepts.

First and foremost, I love this protagonist. He's so sincerely flawed, and he knows so little - we learn as he does, and there's never the feeling that he knows exactly what to say and do - the feeling that I find so unrelatable and unrealistic about so much fiction and fantasy.

Second, the book is legitimately spooky. I don't know enough about writing (or film) to know how to write a good scare and how most writers fall flat. The author moves so fast, she truly jump startled me more than once. Or maybe it comes back to that flawed protagonist - I had no idea what was coming, how it would resolve, or if it would all work out.

I found the build up to the finale (not the finale itself, which I found quite satisfying) to be a bit anticlimactic. It felt like a few loose threads still exist - but maybe thats what the sequels are for. And if not, it was still a great ride.
