This is the second or third time I’ve read this book, not because it’s good, but because every few years I’ll realize that I can’t remember anything about it. Le Guin is my son’s favorite author, and I feel like I should enjoy her books, but somehow this one just evaporates from my memory.

I had a hard time sticking to this book at first: I was eager to read it, but the first few chapters sort of threw me into a reading slump. I imagine it was because of the distant, impersonal style, although lately I've been mostly reading Tolkien's Elder Days stories, which have a similar style and yet fascinate me to no end. So I'm not quite sure why Earthsea didn't draw me in at first. But I stuck with it all the same; and boy am I glad I did!
This is a very unique, precious book about fighting one's own shadow. The last chapter of "A Wizard of Earthsea" felt like an otherworldly experience, and I'm still in awe of the writing... wow.
Shoutout to Nicole Janér for their breathtaking Earthsea art (https://njjaner.com/personal) and to the music I listened to while reading the last chapter of the book ("Rolling Thunder" by Anilah)

DNF, 40%
i just can't read this, like have you ever read a book and it's just physically painful and draining to try and read? that was this book for me, which is crazy because i really love the characters and the way that le guin handles plot. it's just so damn boring lmao 😭😭😭

The narrator is really hard for my brain to process. And I’m half British so it’s not the accent.

DNF. I don’t know if it’s because I read it as an audiobook but this didn’t feel the way everyone says Le Guin’s books are meant to make you feel. I’ll give another of her’s a try at some other point but disappointed about this!
Also so many Welsh accents throughout the audio!? Did I miss that this is a Welsh book or???

I picked this one up as part of a list of prolific authors I wanted to read, and I'm glad I was introduced to Le Guin! I have in recent months already come to the conclusion that fantasy just isn't a favorite genre for me, so I struggled to be very interested in the plot and world here. However, I found the writing itself to be very intriguing, and the suspense buildup for the main character was really well done! I don't know if I'll pick up the rest of this series, but I am interested in trying other genres from Le Guin.
