A Wizard of Earthsea
I've been meaning to read Ursula Le Guin for some years, and have never come across her until now. I got this (and two sequels) from my Dad's bookshelf to my surprise.
The book follows Ged, a young wizard from a rural island in Earthsea, a vast archipelago of scattered islands. In the style of an epic, we are told at the start that Ged (or Sparrowhawk as he is sometimes known) will fulfill a great destiny and become the greatest wizard of Earthsea. From his humble beginnings he travels to a wizard's school and in an act of jealousy and pride dabbles in some dark magic which unleashes a shadow demon on the world. He and the shadow are bound together, and he is seemingly powerless to resist its otherworldly strength. The thrust of the book is his quest to free himself of the evil he created. Along the way friendship are formed and adventure is adventured etc etc.
I enjoyed this book and will read some sequels I expect. I'm a little surprised that Le Guin included so few female characters in her book, especially speaking ones. It was the 60s though.
