The beginning of this book really bummed me out. It felt lazy, it didn't build background like I was hoping, and the character development left a lot to be desired. I had a hard time caring about Bryce, and a hard time believing Hunter's feelings for Bryce. Around the 68% mark, once they were properly together, the relationship felt more real and sturdy, and it makes me think that the author just wanted to rush through the building phase and get to the good stuff, which I can understand, but it leaves me feel the book was lacking. Excellent writing where the hockey elements came in, though. I felt like I was watching a real game, and the excitement and tension were very intense during the games! Overall, I liked this book, just wished it had taken the time to give us the peeks into the characters at the beginning that we needed.

Most of the mm romances I have read (including those included in a why choose or polyamory plotline where they are not the only couple and have other love interests within the group) have been written by women and so are written through and for the female gaze. I rarely read books by men anymore, especially romances but I thought I'd try some mm books by a (I think) gay man. While the writing is different it is closer to romances written by a woman than some of the things straight males write which often feels problematic for a number of reasons. This book captivated me for the prose, the intense, almost over-the-top romance, and the ode to sports. If you have no interest in sports, you probably won't have as much interest in large parts of the book. The author wants you to fall in love with the characters as well as the things the characters love. This is true for all of his other sports romances I've read.

When I feel like someone ripping my heart out so I can look at it, Tal Bauer delivers.
This is a beautiful loving and moving hockey-based romance. There is the gentle introspective love story, the wonderful support and love around our couple. There is a heart stopping crisis, but the story moves through it with love and care.
