Once in a while I fold and read a tiktok viral book and I always regret it. I will acknowledge I dinged this book for having singing scenes with lyric passages which are a personal ick. I think lgbt contemp romance always struggles with this but like the amount of homophobia in these books never feels proportional to the characters anxieties in a wide range of ways. I also felt like there was just a really strange pacing issue with this book. Very lesbian coded for a book with no wlw rep đŸ˜Ș I also remembered why I don’t read sports romance it is just such an ick usually and I can’t pinpoint why other than that everyone is so dramatic in strange ways. Like the whole “empires rose and fell” during a 2 minute penalty was such a bffr moment I think I never got back into it. I will disclaim that I did skip over all the horndog scenes bc I read lots of this at Panera and have a sense of shame so I apologize to the tiktok girlies if that’s where all the critical explanations of why the relationship moved so quickly. I will simply never know.

Turns out, Hallmark-esque hockey romance smut from Kindle Unlimited is not really my thing.

For some unknown reason i feel very compelled to do a small review with this book.
The story was cute but too fast for my liking. They met, they were heartbroken and confused and then in love and also living together in less than what? Two weeks?
Like i said, the story was alright , they were a cute couple who were very in love but that’s it, they were a bit bland, like outside of them being in love and playing hockey there is nothing else to them. I think i would like it a bit more if the characters had a bit more depth, something more memorable about them.
But the real reason for my low score was the french, my book app didn’t translate it directly and even if it did, i wasn’t going to stop reading to go google what it was, also it didn’t add much to the story. Like if phrases here or there, it would make more sense but the amount was a bit too much, entire conversation between two characters and not much of context explained afterwards, so either you had to ignore it, know the language or go out of your way to translate which can take you out of the reading zone.

This book is like
a solid B-
The first half is honestly good, period
Its intense in its flowery a little over the top way
An unapologetic instalove situation with two people who meant to just share reciprocal admiration for each other’s ability in their job i.e. hockey! The sport they love more than anything else!
And then they meet and boom. Soulmates shit
I LOVED IT
And the second half? It was kinda just there?
The issue, in my opinion, its just that the style (which relies heavily on repetition) started to strangle the story
Basically, this could have been a novella and i think it would have SLAPPED
The ending with the huge injury was fine but the the team? Usually i eat that shit up but in this case the team unity was so fucking over the top? It was -and i hate to use the word- cringe as fuck
I would read more of the author, tho, i think but i def need some distance first

Being from Quebec myself, I think a French person should really edit this book! The amount of grammar and spelling in about 50% of the French sentences + the awkwardness of the French spoken in this book, it really ruins the story.

I loved the slow-burn and pining that came along with the initial relationship build up. But once they got together, the story fell pretty flat and got pretty boring. Conflict was an injury, but it didn’t feel like enough.

I find Tal Bauer’s writing style to be pretty mediocre as well. His stories have great premises, but he can’t write well enough to deliver an enjoyable read.
