even stronger than The Peripheral, this novel reads like a Western but with robots

Mid-3, rounding down for Goodread’s integer scale. I think there were two ways this book could have been really interesting, either by having an interesting plot or by exploring the primary stub-universe of the book, a world that is basically present day, with a divergence point only a few years in the past. I think there are a lot of ways to make such a world interestingly different, even though the amount of large change is necessarily limited.

Unfortunately, I don’t think the book excels at either, although I think it is on reasonably solid ground on both counts, thus, 3+.

This was good but not great. 6 years after the first book you inevitably lose the flavor of the first. I still liked the premise, stubs of worlds who may or may not take the same destructive direction as yours and there were some familiar characters returning but the plot and drama of this stub were somewhat weak and confusing.

I will probably read a third if it is published in 2026 and I remember.

A little hard to follow at times, but no one does near-future like Gibson.

Gibson's Agency is a pointless, empty novel that I honestly can't figure out why it exists. At no point is there any tension whatsoever and the entire thing is just....nothing.

I guess he wrote a whole book just to toast Hillary at the end? Cool.

Two stars because I still like the Big Stub stuff.

Rather than repeat what others have said, I will simply note that the repeated mentions of bringing a charger and a Muji bag along and the possibility of these being lost (but minor spoiler alert they aren't actually ever lost, leaving Chekhov's gun unfired) were covered enough to almost warrant sub-plot status. That little goes on in this book. It felt like a sentimental revisit with parts of the Gibson I have loved for years, but ending in a mediocre result.

I rarely read fat sci-fi and I must admit I got lost a few times during this book but I blame that on the fact that I was knitting a hat with complicated cabling during most of it. There was lots of action and futuristic things to think about.
