gonna be real this book was hard to get through. it was kinda fun in the beginning and then it wasnt anymore and it just felt like a chore i need to finish so i put it down and went back to it later. but every time i went back it just still felt like a chore. but i had to return the book to my friend bc i had been keeping it hostage for so long so i finished it bc he really likes the book and i didnt want to say i didnt finish it/like it 😭. Other than that the ending was nice this book is just really slow and it sometimes hard to here about how women are treated in it.

I almost DNF'd this a few times, and I regret not doing so early on.

It's a story I've heard a hundred times, and, besides developing a *bit* of sympathy for Patroclus, I didn't get anything new from this version. I'm just kind of over hearing stories about white men treating women like objects and starting wars for nothing more than bragging rights.

I'm adding the .5 because I enjoyed Miller's writing style. I'll most likely give her another read at some point.

The choice of first person narrative through Patroclus is clever & moving, giving the entire story more emotional depth, in addition to adding an outside perspective to one of the most famous Greek heroes.

The historical references and details of weaponry & battle are peripheral; the bulk of attention is spent humanizing the characters through their lesser-known thoughts & behaviors.

In the end, this well-known war story becomes a rich, beautiful examination of friendship, love, & family.

It's always wyd and never "If I had words to speak such a thing, I would have. But there were none that seemed big enough for it, to hold that swelling truth."

This story is just so beautifully written and well-paced. Every story beat feels so intentional and eloquent. Deeply emotional and rooted in the perspective of a single character, it’s a rollercoaster of feelings and experiences—love, heartache, longing, joy, fear. I’ll always want to return to the atmosphere Miller creates and the tenderness and uncertainty that comes with adolescence and falling in love and facing impossible challenges set in motion by gods and men.

Also, I have listened to the audiobook multiple times and it is possibly one of the best performances I’ve ever experienced.
