3.5 rounded down, I enjoyed this book the least in the series mostly because of Cash's odd attraction towards the obviously creepy preacher man and his very creepy wife. But Gunner the dog is really adorable, the story is gut wrenching, and I enjoy Rendon's writing style a lot. It's very direct and descriptive, feels no nonsense like Cash.

This is the first book in the Cash Blackbear series that I've read. Overall, I really liked it. The detailed place descriptions, down to how things smelled, transported me there and I often felt like I was in the story.
I wanted to give this book a higher rating, but I can't get past the author's use of dissociative identify disorder (formerly called multiple personality disorder) as a tool for evil. It just adds to the stigma people with DID already face. The story simply did not need it. There are so many more interesting and thought-provoking reasons that someone might commit murder, and why someone else would protect that person. Hell, the author even went out of her way to make sure we knew that the pastor never actually killed anyone (just buried them) and that all the murdering was done by the "crazy" wife.
