Very much enjoyed this read. It was beautiful and hopeful, though many times painful as well. It reflects the ongoing struggles of many Asians and immigrants all over the world. So deeply admire Qian and her family's resilience and their steadfast loyalty to one another.
This book very much reminds me of my favorite book in high school, Colours of the Mountain by Da Chen.

I thought this was a beautiful memoir that really opened my eyes to some of the tragedies and trauma that is engrained in American immigrants from such a young age.

Wang’s memoir shares her experiences in NYC at a very young age… which gets me thinking about memories and then I think to myself, could I write a memoir that details my childhood life? I surely could write about a few events, but my memory certainly isn’t accurate. I appreciated hearing about her experiences as a child and trying to comprehend what was going on with the city around her, but I can’t say this book left a big impact on me.

Compelling read about survival as a child. This was an important story to read and I’m very glad I did.
