I really enjoyed this book - the description provided by Diana Gabaldon on her website says that you will meet "a valet, a traitor, an apothecary with a cure for syphilis, a bumptious German and an unscrupulous merchant prince"! Lord John Grey's cousin Olivia is engaged to be married to Mr Joseph Trevaylan. However, Grey discovers something possible unsavoury about Treveylan and sets out to investigate. At the same time he is also looking into a possible case of espionage within his regiment. This book gives a really good picture of London in 1758 - a historical mystery.

Not quite as compelling as the Outlander series, but I’m in it for the long haul at this point.

1757. Lord John Grey is directed to investigate the death of Sergeant Timothy O'Connell. Was he a spy, a traitor. If so who is his spy master.
An entertaining and well-written historical mystery. A good syart to this series.

How refreshing to read Diana Gabaldon's work that is shorter than 300 pages. Surprisingly, I've enjoyed 'Private Matter' more than 'The Fiery Cross'. Gabaldon is a superb writer and it's a real pleasure to read her works if they're well edited and by editing I mean cutting out dozens and dozens of pages where she writes about walking around the forests and breasts full of milk over and over again (sadly, a thorough editing is somewhat lacking in her recent books). In 'The Private Matter' we follow John Grey as he tries to solve a murder of a soldier in London. As usual, Gabaldon does her research well and offers a lot of interesting details about a life in 18th century London with focus on what does it mean to be a homosexual during that period. The intrigue is quite absorbing and I've enjoyed it way more then the 'Hellfire Club' - the first in The Lord John series.
I love Lord John, but I am not sold on this spin off. That probably won't stop me from reading them all though.
