Lord John Grey makes me want to reread Outlander, which is ridiculously disproportionate, and at least two of the MANY books were a slog. But man am I here for the way John deals with obstacles. He has this quality of resigned exasperation that I find so hilarious. But his keen intelligence still comes across, and I found myself engaged in the mystery and how John would have to navigate the labyrinth of social propriety to find out everything he needed to solve it.
The cast of characters around him were also delightfully juicy, and I’m excited to start the next one.

Not as good as the Outlander series, but still a great read. Love Gabaldon's talent to write a good story and to create memorable characters.

Well, this wasn't nearly as engaging as I'd hoped it would be. Gabaldon certainly has the gift of the pen, but I suspect that this story falls a bit flat because it doesn't have the depth of plot or characters as contains the Outlander series. While unfair to compare the two, they are linked and Outlander is such a beloved series that it is inevitable one would make comparisons. However, noteworthy elements of this story include the social lives of 18th century Brits, the flourishing expansion of prostitution houses despite the supposedly religious devotions of the citizenry and the rather logical ways investigators solve crimes pre-microscope-based forensics. Love the wit, satire and way Lord John thinks.
