Took long enough but finally finished it 💪
I quite enjoyed this novel focussing on Lord John who we met originally in the Outlander novels. In fact, I enjoyed it more than some of the Outlanders...
Grey finds himself having to simeltaneously handle two very delicate matters. The first stems from something he witnessed at his gentleman's club. If he saw what he thinks he saw, the ramifications to his family are huge. The only question is, how can he find out the truth of the matter?? The second is a delicate investigation that he is tasked with due to his role in the army. A fellow soldier, who may have been a spy, has been murdered. John needs to find out the truth of his murder and track down the missing, very sensitive information regarding troop deployments.
Fast paced an d engaging. I look forward to reading the next two John Grey's.

As always, Diana Gabaldon has captured my attention and I could not put this book down!
I'm feeling slightly guilty for the 3-star review. This was a good book. It was historically interesting with entertaining characters and it actually made me, well not laugh, but certainly chuckle out loud a few times. In short, it's what I've come to appreciate and expect from Diana Gabaldon.
I recently re-read the entire Outlander series and thought it could be fun to continue on with a character I truly love, Lord John. It turns out that either Lord John is only interesting to me in relation to other Outlander characters or that the mystery format is just not as appealing to me no matter how well written it certainly is. I believe this is primarily due to the fact that this story was happening to and about people I don't know and don't care about. Perhaps given an opportunity to learn about them, this might have changed, but herein lies the one major difference between this book and the Outlander books. There was no character development and there were no consequences that mattered to me should Lord John have failed to solve the mystery.
So while it's more than readable I never felt any burning desire to get back to it and find out what happened next.
But all that being said, I intend to press on. I'm very curious to learn if The Scottish Prisoner, when I come to it, will be more enjoyable to me. That may help me to determine if it's mysteries I don't especially care for or if I'm just opposed to DG writing books that don't really involve Jamie Fraser.
Edit: I see that some reviews mention that the Lord John books ought to be read between Voyager and Drums of Autumn. I disagree completely. I do not think there is any information contained in this story that is at all essential to understanding the Outlander storyline. There is simply no reason to remain true to the chronology. Especially not in a series about time travelers. If you're reading and enjoying the Outlander books, just keep doing that.
