I enjoyed this book but did wish it was a little more solidly set in the same characters and setting as the outlander series. Lord John is a clever and fascinating character and I am happy he gets his own series.

As always, a glimpse into a historical world full of intrigue! This time it's London in the 1700's and it's gay underworld alongside brothels, spies, disease and more.

I don't know why I waited so long to start reading the Lord John series, thinking that it couldn't possibly measure up to the Outlander series. It's different, all right, but just as good!
I found "Lord John and the Private Matter" absolutely riveting. Somehow, I could totally relate to the protagonist - a gay Englishman born in the eighteenth century - even though we have nothing in common. I guess that's Diana Gabaldon's magic: making you empathize and identify with characters who are so distant, and yet at the same time so close to you in their all too flawed human nature.
I'm looking forward to reading the next installment in the series!
