Another damaged man who needs the lurve. Don't know why I like this trope so much, but it really works for me. Plus I will read ALL of the MacKenzies/McBrides.

I started reading this on the plane ride home from SLC. Obviously it didnt hold my attention very well.

This one specifically reminds me of how Beverly Jenkins would go about writing a victorian histrom. The connection to India and Elliot’s history in the army meant this one had a bit more to it than ones about aristo English people in England. I enjoyed that additional angle a lot.
Another review on Hart’s book mentioned how so many of the books in this series are “second chance” in some way - we lose most of the build up of two characters meeting and falling in love. And this one is no different. I saw another reviewer say that the childhood crush element wasn’t convincing enough and in retrospect I agree. While I understood how Elliot’s love for Juliana kept him going, the marriage of convenience trope lost a lot of the juice with both of them just already being in love with the other person AND with all of the conflict keeping them apart also happening off page. It would have been way better for the beginning of the book to actually have been in the past and taking us through that separation and distance. Then I would have been excited at them getting together at the church randomly!!
The other thing that confused me was Juliana’s age. 30 and unmarried? Was she waiting for him? I never felt like her behavior/background matched the age/maturity level she was supposed to have. It would have been fun for her to maybe have been a widow or something so she could have *felt* 30 in context.
This makes it seem like I didn’t like it. I did like it a lot! More like it could have been great with some structural changes lol because the bones and plot were really enjoyable. A bit more out there with the assassin and tunnel chasing vibes, but I really liked the exploration of Elliot’s PTSD and the larger cast of characters. I had a lot of fun!

this was sweet! i wasnt as attached to the characters as i could have been, but i liked the plot, the glimpses of other characters, and the ending was sweet :) also, i wished that the “childhood friends” aspect was developed a little further

This book mainly dealt with the heroes struggles and how the hero and heroine overcame it for their HEA. There were many similarities between the first book and this fifth book in the series. Elliot is also mad as Ian was mad, but Elliot's madness is because he was captured and tortured for more than a year. His Indian servants and their devotion to Elliot was entertaining. Some mystery with a dead man coming alive to stalk made it more interesting.
