This book is a simple read and it really feels like your reading her diary. I would not recommend this book if your looking more for facts on the Bosnian war because it doesn't have very many. If your looking more for the emotional side of the war and how it affected peoples life this is a great good for you. You get to see the war from a 11 year old girl who has her life change dramatically, over the 3 years. The book talked about the struggle they had to go threw and the loss. I would recommend this book for people who enjoy reading diary entree styled books.

This was a quick and easy read, as one would expect from a child's diary. Zlata's frustration - she just wants to be a normal kid without all this politics and war crap - is palpable and heart wrenching. Hearing in her own words the hardships she and her family faced is agonizing and brings to mind nothing but the millions of kids around the world dealing with war and trauma even today.
