You just can’t go wrong with Hap and Leonard and the trouble that they get into. They are the type of friends that everyone wishes they had. Filled with sarcastic humor and deep human emotion that only Joe R Lansdale can deliver.

it was great, my library was missing the first three books but i have already seen the show.

some lines must have been borrowed for one of the seasons as it almost felt like i had read them before.

looking forward to Brett getting added into the mix, i am going to eventually read the rest.

Loved the rabies

This was the usual Hap and Leonard fare - lots of humor, interesting story, fast reading. It started out with a pretty hilarious story where Hap got attacked by a rabid squirrel (well, he didn't think it was very hilarious). If you don't find that part funny, then you probably won't like the series, so you might as well stop.

As usual, the story itself it not that important, it's just something to keep us reading as the wisecracks keep coming. Enjoy the ride.

I just discovered Netflix has a series based on this book. I plan to watch it soon. Hope it's half as good as the books.

Hap and Leonard have never let me down so far, and this time they do their best work yet. Lansdale at his best.

I really like Hap and Leonard and their quirky friendship and some of the crazy stuff they get into. So it was fun, some good action, good humor and bad jokes tossed around.

BUT THE SECOND AND THIRD BOOKS IN THE SERIES HAVE BEEN ALMOST TWICE AS LONG AS NECESSARY WHILE THE AUTHOR EATS UP pages describing each shade of the sky or dust covered boots with a half-page of frivolities that just don’t go there..

If they get better later, maybe someone will let me know.

Maybe Cold in July—liked the movie a lot. But no more Hap and Leonard. Just not worth it. If I wanted to read crappy romance novels, I would have looked for some.

The torture scenes in Bad Chili are a little overboard especially coming from a first person narrator and it doesn't mesh that well with the good natured southern banter of the rest of the book but the core characters of this book and unexpected plot twists really hold it together.

This is another politically uncorrect wacky mystery featuring best friends Hap and Leonard. Hap is an everyman sort of slacker guy and Leonard is a big, tough black guy who happens to like men. Hap and Leonard love each other like brothers and are the unlikeliest of friends and their friendship has survived longer than any of their previous relationships. They are hilarious together, especially in this book which, thankfully, isn’t quite as dark as “Two Bear Mambo, though it has its dark moments (dog lovers beware).

Things start off when Hap is bit by a rabid squirrel. He has such shitty health insurance (I hear ya, Hap) that he has to get admitted in order to get his shots paid for so he doesn’t turn all bitey and dangerous. But he’s met a sexy nurse who hopes to give him his next round of shots in the bum so it’s not all so bad. Meanwhile Leonard’s boyfriend Raul has left him for a biker dude and Leonard is on a rampage. When a biker turns up “all headless horseman like” all eyes are on Leonard who has mysteriously disappeared. So once again Hap (and Leonard) end up knee deep in a mystery filled with a colorful cast of foul-mouthed characters. This one involves grease stealing and an underground group who are making a bundle selling videos of atrocious attacks on gay men.

Lansdale is such a naughty writer and doesn’t seem to care who he offends. But his humor is funny and doesn’t come across as mean-spirited so you can’t help but laugh as he pokes fun at his characters, their sexual habits, appearance and/or lack of brains. There’s a lot of sex talk, bad words and unforgettable characters here and as crazy as it all gets there are a few downright sweet moments too. This is one of my favorites in the Hap and Leonard series.

Wonderfully brisk, unrelentingly dark humoured and satisfyingly violent. Also the first chapter genuinely made me chuckle out loud. Proper funny writing... with rabies.

Worth it for the squirrel attack alone.
