This was... Not good. The characters are flat (and I could barely tell the two older sisters apart) and the book just drags on and on. DNF'd at about 70%.

Every witch is a woman scorned. Belladonna, Agnes and Juniper are three sisters who have experienced their fair share of trials and tribulations. Tired with a woman's lot in a cruel world, they determine to call back the magic lost to them.

This novel is absolutely spell-binding. The magic is subtly written throughout the story until it is decided that the sisters will bring it back, at which time we see strong characters become formidable, and writing that is enchanting.

The Once and Future Witches is a tale powerful in its own right for being beautifully written, but it stands for so much more. Friendship, love, sisterhood and feminism are explored in ways that are deep and meaningful and will leave a lasting impression on the reader.

Readers that enjoyed The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue , A Court of Thorns and Roses and The Castings .

I LOVE Alix E. Harrow. This book absolutely wonderful, and I feel bad not giving it 5 stars, but compared to her other books, it was not quite as perfect. That being said, I thought this was such an interesting exploration of a family of sisters, their chosen family, and the challenges that women have faced for hundreds of years.

These three sisters, so broken by the abuse of their father, all find their own ways to deal with it in adulthood, but finally come together to bring witching back to the world. The supporting cast of characters who come to help them are all interesting and well-written. I loved the theme of witchcraft being what bridges the gap between what a woman needs and what she has. Beautifully written, heart-breaking but also uplifting ending.

I chalk this up to possibly being a good book at the wrong time. But honestly there was so much going on I didn’t follow everything. This will not be a great review… but I think I kinda liked it?
