The premise is intriguing: a memoir that covers only the childhood years of the author (from birth through age fourteen) . . . written entirely in verse. But does a work deserve our praise simply by virtue of its novelty?

A lovely memoir told in verse by a Cuban American about her first fourteen years--growing up during the Cuban Missile Crisis and feeling the tension of loving two places when political powers separate family.

I don't usually like books consisting of only poetry, so I was expecting to dislike this book. Surprise! I didn't! I felt the emotions going on in the story and got more emotionally connected than I usually do in such a short book. So really great!

Margarita Engle's poetry was beautiful, but I found this story lacking at times. I wanted to know more about my conflicted narrator than I ended up learning.

I wasn't sure I would make it through this one, but about halfway I suddenly became interested.

All the stars!!!! A memoir written in verse. So creative and beautiful. I can't even begin to express how much I loved this. It will hit home for a lot of people, especially those that have felt the pull of two different cultures. There's really nothing else I can say, except read it.
Mi corazon esta con todos nuestros hermanos Cubanos que han tenido que pasar por el dolor de estar separados de sus seres queridos. Les mando amor y paz.

Interesting book on the Cuban missile crisis through a child's eye. Loved how it was a novel-in-verse.
