Quick, fun, forgettable read.  I honestly don’t understand how this book/series is regarded as highly as it is because the writing is pretty meh and the plots aren’t anything all that special.  Any character that could be interesting is usually portrayed as being painfully two-dimensional.  It all adds up to something a bit more paint-by-numbers than cleverly constructed.  I really want to love these books, but none of these have been anything better or worse than a pleasant diversion.

I thought I would give this series another try after I took a break for over a year, but no. Just no. I'm done with Harry and his sexist BS.

Finally this series starts to get good. 5 books in and there is finally a antagonist that feel like a big bad guy and will stick around for a while. Some nice new characters that are quite likeable. The "case" plot fizzled early and just felt like a devise for the main plot of the story but that was probably intentional. I'm still not a fan of the whole magic system, which kinda kills my enjoyment a bit,l but hopefully the series will continue with this upward trend.

This story was a return to more Chicago than the previous installment's focus on the fae. Interesting to see how the layers of religion are being laid into the story as well. I still have no idea the connection to his parents and all that. Hoping it gets explored in the next.

The time spent with Michael's family was a nice expansion of his character. Get more of a read on Charity and the kids. Funny that the oldest girl is hiding nose rings etc.

Dresden Series Book #5

This series really does get better. While book #4 has tied in a lot of the story from previous books, this one seems to be about touching up and pushing forward the character development. The snark and dialogue seem to be getting more enjoyable and less wow that's too cheesy. Still cheesy, but in a fun way.

I recommend reading the series in order. There is a lot of recap and it is done very well so a reader will not be completely lost in the story and character developments to this point if not read in order. I still suggest slogging through those first few books to get to this point because you really see the development of series, character, story, world. Though I have heard some suggest skipping the first 3ish books. I suppose if you just can't get through them it wouldn't be a complete loss. I suggest at least giving it a real go, maybe skim through them if you must.
