Me: "Wow, this book is so much less patronisingly chauvinistic than the previous books in the series; less obsessed with sexualising women in pornographic detail while simultaneously being repulsed by and condemning female sexuality. And what's this?... The possibility of two well-written female characters in a same sex relationship?..."

Jim Butcher: *Immediately kills off one of them so that he can lament (through Harry) that it hurts his patronisingly benevolent chauvinism more to see a woman killed by violence.*

A spiritual successor to Grave Peril, Death Masks is easily my favorite Dresden Files book. Nearly every chapter ends with a cliffhanger and I found the new villains, particularly Nicodemus, to be compelling and scary. His faction feels like a terrifying future part of these books.

No Dresden book (so far) is without its faults. I still found Harry’s leering behavior to be off-putting and am not a fan of the first person narrative telling you Dresden has a plan but not telling it to you until he executes it. Otherwise, this book was fantastic!
