An entertaining and quick read, maybe not quite as good as summer knight, it did a lot to move the Dresden world on

Opening Statement
Initial thoughts about the book
We’re back with another Dresden files book! I adore this series and this one was a great addition to the others. Quick thoughts are that this one seems to continue the main “Red Court” thread but doesn’t affect the main story in nearly the same way that Summer Knight did. Lots of great character moments with this one mainly with Suzan and Michael.

Characters - 7
I had a great time with the characters in this book. Harry was Harry, always a blast and a hilarious and excellent protagonist. This book mainly revolves around Suzan (new vamp version) and the 3 holy knights (Michael, Sonia, and Shiro). I really enjoy Michael as a character in this series due to the vast difference between his powers and Harrys and this book REALLY tapped into that divide. All of the other sub characters were great when interacting with Harry and we had some other heavy hitters this time around:
- The Archive
- Thomas (Returns!)
- Nicodemous (This guy is gonna be important)
In summary the characters were great! Truly the best part of this book, this book seems to serve as a character introduction for some important figures.
Atmosphere/Setting - 5
The setting is totally the same as the other books! No crazy realms this time around just a bunch of different places around Chicago. Not much to say here
Writing Style - 8
I’ve realized that one of the main reasons I keep coming back to these books is the super fun writing style that Jim Butcher uses (Specifically to write Harry). I love the snarkieness and clever comebacks mixed with jokes and a super fun world. It keeps me engaged the whole time and legitimately makes me laugh a lot of the time.
Plot - 6
The plot of this book is pretty good, albeit slow at times! I took a big break in the middle of reading this because of how slow it was right around the middle. The big focus of this one is “The Shroud” (of Jesus Christ) which is VERY cool. Just the fact that all the nights are fighting fallen angels this whole book and Harry is wildly out of his element is. The B plot of this book is the duel between Harry and the Count Ordov? Orley? Oslo? I can’t remember. This serves as a catalyst to introduce the Archive (Who I love) and bring Suzan back into the story. Also we got a bit more info on Gentlement Johnny Marcone which was awesome.
Intrigue - 4
The main intrigue of this book revolves around the fallen angel coins that are being passed around the city by Nicodemus in his quest for the Shroud. Honestly not the most riveting Dresden plot, as I mentioned previously I wasn’t gripped with this story, it served as a great transport for awesome singular character moments but as a whole the intrigue was kinda meh!
Emotional Impact - 7
Lots of emotional scenes in this book. Shiro dying totally took me by surprise, I guessed it might happen at a number of points but I’m shocked Butcher actually went through with it. Also the moments between Michael and Harry in this book are really great, this built on the dichotomy of these characters good/evil, caution/brashness really great stuff. Johnny Marcones daughter TOTALLY caught me by surprise at the end of the book and really makes me like his character (And Harry’s) even more. Finally the scenes between Suzan and Harry are really emotional and heart wrenching, they both still love each other but based on her curse and Harry’s current situation with the war they can’t be together and this really made me feel some feelings this book.
Enjoyment - 7
Just like the other books in this series I really enjoyed this book! I don’t think it kept my attention like some of the other additions to the series but I’m very curious to see where the threads that were created in this book lead in later books. The end of this book was particularly very good and I’m stoked for the next book! See you soon Dresden (or if the cycle continues in exactly 1 years time in book time!)

This is another Dresden book that I loved, but which didn't quite capture the magic of previous books. I was happy to see Susan back and Micheal as well. The big payoff of the duel felt a little flat. I did enjoy Harry's moment with Molly and the rest of Micheal's children. I love the big brother/uncle aspect there. I also really enjoyed the conversation with Charity and why she's not always so happy to see Harry. As a mom, I completely understand where she is coming from. There was not enough Murphy in this one, especially by the middle and end, where I expected more action from her.
