So, I initially DNF'ed this book and this series but decided to return many months later as I still found myself wanting something light and easy to listen. After finishing Death Masks I am mildly entertained. This book is better than watching re-runs of sitcom shows, I will give you that. I think Dresden files suffers from "designed for TV" syndrome with its strong commitment to episodic storytelling and a lack of commitment to a overarching narrative. It seemed like such a narrative was starting in book 4 but was mostly ignored in book 5, as it spent most of the time solving the mystery of the day. The only plot element that had something to do with an overarching narrative snuffed out at the end without much fanfare.

Dresden continues to be his charming self but there some moments where the author seems to comment unnecessary things about women. A certain teenage girl was sexually described by the author and I don't know why. I get that Dresden didn't think this in his mind, but the author went in that direction anyway. Why can't a grown man have a normal conversation with a 14-year-old daughter of a friend without going into sexual topics ? It is just so creepy. Jim Butcher, do better.

These books have definitely gotten better as I’ve gotten further into them.
I’d read this solely for the world-building itself. The different factions, creatures and things happening make for a fun, fast-paced novel.

I’ve been spacing out reading the books because it’s been a bit hard to get motivated but I find myself excited for the next book.

I also really enjoy the narration style and vibes from the main character. I find myself laughing at points and feeling his frustration and sadness at others. Overall, a really fun read.
