Read Crimson (also called Last Night in Nuuk) as part of the Reading Around the World challenge/book club for Greenland!

The story is told through switching POVs from 5 interconnected characters/friends. Each character gets one chapter which I didn’t feel like was enough to get to know them, especially considering this is a character driven story with no plot.

Each character’s POV is told through different formatting styles which was unique. Some included text messages, one was told using timestamps throughout a single day, and one was told through letters and diary entries.

I didn’t like most of the chapters because they were repetitive, stream of consciousness which is a style I never really enjoy. The only one I did enjoy was Inuk because his chapter was the one told through diary entries (and he didn’t tend to repeat himself).

I felt Inuk had some of the best character development (and maybe the only one with any real development).

Arnaq had too much telling instead of showing as well as being repetive.

There were timeline jumps all over the place which was confusing. Most of the chapters were just told through the different character’s perspectives.

There is no strong sense of location, it could be set anywhere given the (lack of) descriptions. Which is upsetting because I was reading this to try and learn more about Greenland and its culture. It’s a book that has been written (angsty young adults drinking and having relationship problems while trying to find themselves) many times before but maybe not in Greenland? So I guess I hoped for more of an added experience of how this kind of story would play out or who the characters would be in the context of Greenland’s culture and setting. The one thing that make it clear that the setting was Greenland was the occasional use of Greenlandic words, which i did enjoy!

I felt no connection to the characters, there isn’t much development or depth to them. The writing style also didn’t help me get to know them.

The novel is basically no thoughts just vibes. Quick read because of it’s formatting otherwise I might have DNFd. I will however say kudos to the author for writing something unique compared to other Greenlandic authors. Every other fiction book I could find for Greenland was crime/mystery which is why I chose this instead. It wasn’t great or bad, just average and probably one I’ll forget but I’d be willing to check out more from Korneliussen! I guess I’ll have to turn to non fiction and my own research to learn more about Greenland 🇬🇱

this was the first book Storygraph ever recommended me. that was almost three years ago. I needed something quick to get me back into reading mood so I finally picked it and then voilà, read a half of it before bedtime.
the stream of consciousness really did it for me. made this into a probe into the queer, young adult, Greenlandic experience, and I appreciate it so much for what it is.

Idée intéressante, histoire en elle-même plutôt bien mais l'écriture manque de profondeur et de travail. (c'est peut-être la trafuction)

I appreciated reading this book from a culture that I know next to nothing about. The atmosphere at their parties, and in their homes was palpable and really dumped me right into this new land.

The characters were all individual and each had their own struggles that were alluded to and became clearer as they took over the narrative. Of all the perspectives, I enjoyed the final perspective from Sara the most as it not only had the most conventional writing style, but her inner dialogue was so different to how she was viewed by the other characters.

Unfortunately the aforementioned writing style was an issue for me. A lot of murkiness and stream of consciousness that just wasn't my jam. The characters also acted quite illogically a lot of the time and were hard to get a handle on even within their own narratives.

Overall I enjoyed and appreciated this book but can't see myself remembering it much in the future.
