One of the best books of this series. It's so full of action and character development. I can't get over how funny Nine is and how bad-ass. Marina is my favorite female and Sarah is also kicking ass. Personally I love how John, Four, is becoming more of a leader and developing. He is getting less whiny, but is still unrealistic. This such a sad book as well, I really shed a tear in the end. I can't wait to read the next one.

3.5 stars. Initial reactions: Gah!!!! More Questions....

OH MY GOD. What just happened? How could the author do such a thing? Eight was one of my favourite characters! How could he just die? Yeah, I know with the prophecy and all it was bound to happen, but still! And Five, I now hate him more than I originally did. Like, more than I hate Nine.

This is a huge book of nothing. So much nothing, in fact, that I think I am done with the series, and I have never abandoned a series before. After a few books, I feel like I've made an investment (time and money!) and must finish. Not with this one!

The book starts with the Mogadorians holding Sam and torturing him for information about Four and the other Loric. Fortunately, Sam doesn't know the plan, so he cannot put his friends in danger. He is rescued by his father and a Mogadorian named Adam, who the reunited father and son leave behind.

Meanwhile, numbers 4-10 (minus 5) are holed up in Nine's Chicago penthouse. There's a lot of bickering about what they should do next and some training montages to break up the monotony. Through their surveillance technology, the Loric discover that Five is trying to contact them. Four, Six, and Sarah (really Four? You're going to let your girlfriend participate int his?) rush to meet him, where they are attacked by a few Mogadorians. They are saved when Sam and his father show up randomly in their truck.

Then it's back to the penthouse with Five for more sitting around, bickering, and training. When Ten falls into a trance and somehow pulls Four into it, the Loric decide to leave the humans with Four and Ten and go looking for Five's Chest, which he buried in the Everglades. Predictably, the Mogodorians attack the penthouse and the plot twist everyone saw coming
Spoiler because it's in the title!
Spoiler occurs in the Everglades.

Not only was there a lot of waiting around in this book, but the writing is terrible. Lore switches narrators, but there is no way to tell when the switches take place. I got into the habit of spending the first page of each chapter trying to figure out who the narrator was. At one point, though, Lore switches in the middle of a chapter! I just gave up, since it doesn't matter who is narrating anyway.

So, I'm not a YA, just occasionally reading like one, but I didn't think this addition to the Lorien Legacies was as good as previous books in the series. It was airline reading for me, and I found myself skimming through a dozen pages at a time. It started out slow, and stayed slow for most of the book, until the last 20-25%, where it finally picked up. Lots of unproductive dialogue, and other such filler to make it longer. This really felt like it should have been a few chapters in a better book, rather than a whole volume on its own. The title really says it all, with only a few details bringing a not-so-surprising surprise ending...Five is found, and Five falls.

I'm still enjoying this series, but this one ended on a cliffhanger, and had 6 additional chapters from 3 different books, tricking me into thinking it was longer. I hate that.
