Did I pick up this book purely because of the cover? Yes, yes I did. And I am not disappointed in that either.

This was such a fun, fast paced, gripping thriller. It is a perfect summer thriller. I love that this was told from two female perspectives. The way that the author tangled these two together along with different time periods really helped you understand how they came to be such close friends. Though this was a thriller, I really enjoyed the found family aspect of it. I love a good book with strong female characters just trying to live their life. While the twist in this book wasn't jaw dropping, I really enjoyed the way the author took the book.

This was the first book I have read by this author and I absolutely will be picking up more by her!

Thank you PRHA for the gifted copy. All opinions are my own.

Thank you NetGalley for this ARC!

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Parts of the plot were a bit confusing and jumping back and forth between time periods, and characters, made my brain hurt. But overall, the premise was unique and unlike anything I’ve read before. I was already a fan of Wendy Heard and this solidified that I will continue to read more of her books.

Oh my gaaawwwwdddd this book!!!! From the beginning I was totally HOOKED. Leo and Summer were such awesome characters and I love the depth that was built by providing flashbacks to their lives before they met each other. They came from such different backgrounds and traumatic events from their pasts really helped shape their present selves.

I went into this book totally blind and I absolutely recommend that for anyone considering it. I had NO idea where it was going and it was absolutely thrilling! I loved the storyline when Leo and Summer were just two hot babes trying to make it in the world by swindling rich guys and I loved it even more when the story went places I totally wasn't expecting.

The writing was fantastic, the character building was stellar, and I loved the use of multiple narrators and timelines. I did have one gripe with the story and that was that I wish there was more closure with Leo's story. There was a loose end I was hoping would get more attention and it felt incomplete to me.

This book is sexy, smart, exudes girl power and sisterhood, and was pretty unique. I was totally absorbed and didn't want it to end! I'm hoping a major network picks this up because it would make a stellar miniseries or movie!!

Thank you to Ballantine and NetGalley for the copy. I'll be recommending this one to everyone!!

Summer and Leo are as free and untethered as the California breeze. They live out of Summer’s Land Cruiser and don’t stay in any one place for too long. Thanks to Summer’s expert pickpocket and thievery skills that she learned growing up on the road with the hippie mother who left her behind years ago, they are a seemingly unstoppable (and inseparable) force against the world. When Leo intentionally crosses paths with a billionaire that catches her attention in attempts to score big… their games quickly become deadly.

I enjoyed this one a lot! It had lots of great, thrilling twists I didn’t see coming and it kept my attention the whole time. The plot was unique, well-written, and got right down to business which I love in a book. This was my first time reading Wendy Heard but I’ll definitely look out for more from her in the future!

Thank you so much to PRH/Ballantine Books, Wendy, and NetGalley for the advance reader’s copy!

3.5 - I enjoyed the characters a lot more than the story which was required so much suspended disbelief, I still ache from holding onto it.

(And specific to the audiobook, one of the narrators had a vocal style that just grated on me. It was along the lines of the opposite of the stereotypical raising the voice at the end of every sentence to make it a question, lowering it instead, which created all sorts of odd emphasis. Never a good sign when I spend more time thinking about how the words are said than what they are.)

Although far-fetched at times, I enjoyed many aspects of this thriller. I liked the nomadic lifestyle of the Summer and Leo, the strength of their friendship, and their own personal strengths. Both women have suffered significant traumas, and I liked the way that the author incorporated their growth and healing into the story. I loved the secluded island setting and think it added so much to the tension of the book. A quick and engaging read.

I really enjoy a heart pumping thriller, but I’m also a wimp and can’t handle anything super graphic or disturbing. For me, this book fit the bill.

This extremely fast paced thriller follows two women grifters who have built their lives on the fringe of society, pickpocketing and occasionally going after the long con with the big pay off.

This time, the long con sends them to a private island owned by a billionaire. The setting was perfect—beautiful and glamorous, but with a dark and eerie underside. It lends the novel a claustrophobia that drives the plot forward with increasing urgency.

The women’s arrival at the island sets off a string of events that leaves both women racing to decide who can be trusted and who, exactly, is conning who.

Potential spoiler ahead—the ending was a little unsatisfying for me, but I also thought it made an important point about how our justice system favors the wealthy and well known, especially white men. Who’s story will the system believe? Two women living on the edges of the legal system or a wealthy, white billionaire and the many friends he’s placed around himself?

Content warning: disturbing events, including sexual assault and murder, are discussed, but not in graphic detail.

Summer and Leo are best friends, living a nomadic life and conning people out of their money as well as stealing. Summer was abandoned as a teenager, and Leo is running from her traumatic past. Leo has a tech billionaire as her next mark, and is invited to spend time with him at his private island. When she suddenly goes missing, Summer will stop at nothing to track down her friend.

This was quite a page turner! I was eager to see what would happen next. Summer and Leo shouldn’t be likable, but for some reason I couldn’t help but root for them. Some of the twists I was able to guess, but others were more surprising. Overall, it was an interesting concept for a mystery and thriller. I’d recommend it to those who enjoy books about missing people, cold cases, and cons.

Thank you to Wendy Heard, Random House- Ballantine, and Netgalley for sending me this arc in exchange for my honest review.
