I felt satisfied when I closed the book. This is a 5-star read for me! The two main characters are smart, interesting, and make you want to root for them. The scenery was vivid, I felt like I was inside the book.
fast-paced
The cover of this book caught my attention and I really liked the plot summary.
The book is about Summer and Leo, two grifters who are floating through life on their own terms. Leo sets her eyes on Michael, a tech billionaire, and schemes to get whatever she wants from him.
Unfortunately for Leo, things don’t go as planned. Summer, knowing Leo wouldn’t disappear on her, sets off to Michael’s island (isn’t that crazy?) to find her and things go off the rails from there.
This was a fast, fun read that was quite enjoyable and different from what I usually read.
Thanks as always to NetGalley for a copy to read in exchange for a review.

You Can Trust Me by Wendy Heard is a thriller that follows Summer and Leo, two nomadic ladies who get by through thievery and grifts while trying to stay off the radar. Summer was born into the lifestyle while Leo is a runaway. Together they are very close so when Leo goes missing, Summer is desperate to find answers. This leads her to a mysterious island owned by a tech guru that is in the middle of having a weekend getaway where Summer finds herself in deep with people she may not be able to keep up with.
I was so hooked by the first 25 percent of this book. I loved Summer and Leo’s introduction and sisterly bond. I always love a little heist so seeing them working their talents to get some money was really fun. My attention kind of waned a little in the second quarter because the story got a little stale. And then the last half of this book really lost me. I felt like any big twists were very easy to spot so I kept reading hoping that maybe it was a fakeout and something else would happen but it was just boring. The timeline is also very convoluted. We get both girls’ POV but happening a day or two apart and it was just really odd and confusing. I also think there was a pretty big plot hole towards the end that was kind of looked over for the sake of plot convenience. There was also a side female character that really gave me bad vibes and I don’t think it was intentional for the story.
I’m really bummed because I was so sure this was going to be something that I loved. Thank you so much to Penguin Random House for sending me this arc to read and review ahead of its release. I know some people will really love it.

A kind of corny thriller that feels like it could easily be made into a movie. The characters were midline enough to be likable but unrelatable, the character development all happened where we didn’t get to see it, and the characters aside from the two mains seemed very single faceted. I also honestly think the name of the books should be changed to The Island, since it seems more accurate to the themes of claustrophobia and isolation. I thoroughly enjoyed this book, though there’s one major question I’m left with and consider this a plot hole (did I just overlook and skim this part? Please correct me if I’m wrong)…

How TF did Michael know Leo was Amanda’s sister? Sure, Amanda spoke about Leo on their date and the sisters look alike, but Michael doesn’t seem hung up on other sisters of people he’s killed. Did he see a photo of them together before meeting Amanda and think, ‘them!’ Because he says he was searching for her for years and lost her when she went off grid just to hang the IG algorithm suggest her selfie, which is also a plot hole. He says he even asked IG itself about how the algorithm worked to bring him her photo. So Michael was searching for Leo and obsessing over her for years, why? And why DID IG suggest the photo to him? This is a weird plot point that caused me confusion and didn’t benefit the story at all.

This was a recommendation from NetGalley.
I enjoyed this book. It was a fast read, quick paced mystery/action story.
I would recommend this book for people who are into; traumatic pasts/hidden histories, women friendships, found families, dislike of the patriarchy/capitalism.
I just reviewed You Can Trust Me by Wendy Heard. #YouCanTrustMe #NetGalley

Summer and Leo are friends, but their relationship is more that of sisters. They live together and travel around California looking for a good life. Summer learned to be a pickpocket at the age of eight and is a seasoned con, they’re skills shes taught Leo. Leo finds a big tech billionaire she has her sights on. This con is going to take a lot. When Leo disappears after spending the night with him, Summer is all alone after years. Will Summer be able to figure out what happened to Leo? Or is she just gone without a trace?
I really enjoyed both Summer and Leo as characters. They were so well developed and thought out! I loved how the book alternated between chapters from both points of view. It really added to the story and provided some additional depth. I also really enjoyed the flashbacks – they were great and added context for how both Summer and Leo are. I felt so much for both characters! This book kept me guessing the entire time – I never knew what was going to happen. The pacing was also great and kept me waiting for more and engaged at the same time.
If you’re looking for a wonderfully twisty close proximity thriller, then make sure to check this one out on June 13th! It would be the perfect poolside or beach read.
