An essential horror novel that is still as creepy and scary even hundreds of years later.

Read through Dracula Daily, an in-real-time delivery of the novel through email, which I would highly recommend.

This is my second time reading the book, and I found it to be a lot more enjoyable than my first read, which is definitely because it took six months to read in real time, as opposed to the week I flew through it the first time I read it.

In all, a book you have to chew through slowly, which isn't a bad thing at all.

What an incredible let down. This novel is what you get when you ask a Victorian Englishman what scares him. The answer is cultures and religions outside Christianity and Women’s sexuality.
The first section of the novel where Jonathan Harker visits Dracula’s castle was everything I had hoped it would be: eerie, suspenseful, and otherworldly. Unfortunately, it rapidly went downhill from there. The significant women in this novel, Mina and Lucy, are basically there as ornamentation for the “brave gallant men” in their lives. Their only true purpose seems to be as an idol of modesty and purity that all women should be.
Dracula, in fact, seems to be seducing these woman for sex by appealing to their desires under the thinly veiled metaphor of blood drinking. This is seen as a threat by the men because if their women become wanton sexual creatures they can then seduce the men away from “God’s light”.
On a more practical note, the story felt like it dragged on forever in the middle and the ending was rushed.
Overall, I hated it. At least some of the spin offs from the source material are a lot better.

great storytelling i love the epistolary style both this and frankenstein are written in, only thing is the pacing in dracula isn’t my favorite. took too long and conclusion of the threat was over within a sentence

I liked it, but its about 50 pages too long. Way too much sitting around and talking about their plans.
