Some of the narrator’s choices were annoying, but overall I really liked the book.

I loved the first 2/3 of this book, but by the end it had lost a bit of it's luster. Nevertheless, it was a creative and enjoyable story.

This man never ceases to amaze me. I am in love with everything I have ever read by him, and this children's story is no exception. Light-hearted and fun, many laughs, rife with symbolism and allegory I have learned to love from Rushdie.

For those that never read any Rushdie, this would be a good place to start. Because it is technically a book for children, it is short and easily digestible, and you won't be disappointed.

Lots of fun wordplay, turn of phrase, and mystical/mythical daring do.

This story continually reminded me of Alice in Wonderland... if Alice was a dude trying to get back his dad's story-telling mojo, and Wonderland was more middle-eastern in its influences.

Rushdie knows how to keep up a running joke, and his writing style is pleasantly palatable. Descriptions were particularly adept. The world-building was a touch confusing at times, and I didn't feel particularly invested in the characters. But I largely enjoyed the tale, nonetheless.

The best part is the language, witty and fun, but there is not enough substance under that first layer for the book to be really good.

Different than anything else I've read by Rushdie for sure. It's more of a children's tale; shades of Wizard of Oz and that kind of thing more than Satanic Verses. At its heart it's a pun-filled tale about the power of story. I would have liked to see some other things happen in it, but it's cute overall. (And a quick read. It really could be done in a long afternoon if you wanted).
