It is frightening how this book mirrors our society's emphasis on beauty. With people like Heidi Montag and Joan Rivers, I see our socieity leaning more and more towards the pretty opperation.

My 12 yr old daughter wanted to read this. And as with most YA books, I felt the need to check it out before she read it. It also had my curiosity with its interesting storyline. But unfortunately, I found it boring and couldnt finish it. Maybe I just dont like sci-fi or maybe it was written to simply.

This book was amazing. For a book about the trouble with self-image it wasn't over the top and out there. It was done in an interesting way that I think you can ignore the message of what being pretty really means and still enjoy the book. I'm looking forward to read the rest of the series.

Perhaps if I read this book 15 years ago I would have liked it better. The world building is just not up to snuff, nor are the characters as interesting as I'd hoped.

3.5! Pros: The book never lagged. Cons: The "twist" to the surgeries was fairly obvious at the very beginning + The female characters' motives were a little too superficial for my taste + Westerfeld saying "Let's just Thoreau it!" is naive.

I absolutely love this book! It has so many decisions and pulls and none of them are black/white. I am excited to continue the story in the next book!
