I was only vaguely familiar with the Moomins before starting this book. I don't think these books have ever been translated into Spanish, so I never came across them when I was little, and the animated series was also never shown in Spain. I first encountered these little creatures a few years ago, and entirely by chance.
Even though it is not possible for me to feel nostalgic about them, this book still somehow creates the cosiest, warmest atmosphere. This book doesn't even have any Moomins in it, and the secondary characters were interesting enough to keep me invested. Utterly lovely.

Tove Jansson är fantastisk. Tyckte inte riktigt om den här lika mycket som Trollvinter men den var ändå SÅ BRA. 4.5 stjärnor. Jag älskar Mumin.
4.5 stars. The Moomins are gone. Their friends, who relied on them more than they realized, have to learn to be a community without them.
I kept thinking about a community house that was part of our lives for just over a year (really, it should have been named Moominhouse), and the loss of it in our lives. People move on, alas, and yet we still love them. Tove Jansson was wise enough to recognize this and write about it.

These characters are insane, some might have mental illnesses, and they're a bit mean to each other, but it's still a wonderful evening at home.
i usually read this book every november because it perfectly captures the way the inside of my brain feels this time of year: melancholic, impulsive, and instinctively reaching for warmth in the people around me.
i read recently that tove jansson wrote this book after her mother died, and it shows in the bleakness and the eeriness, and in the sharp edges that every character shows as they try to fill the empty space with something that feels big enough to fill it. no one really succeeds — there is only one moominmamma and moominpappa and moomintroll, after all — but they all grow together, in the rain and the dark, and that’s a little miracle all its own.
