One of the first books I've read where I flat out hated the main protagonist Lee Fiora. Curtis Sittenfeld is definitely a talented writer but even the best writing could not convince me to like this main character. I know teenage angst (I live with one) but this one just seemed to go too far with the angst and self hating. I kept hoping for the character to mature or learn something but this never happened. I guess at college something happens (or so it seems when the narration talks about the future Lee) but we don't see any of this. I found myself actually caring more for the one dimensional friends/students that Lee had contact with than for her. It was a tough 400+ read.

Other readers complain nothing happens. But surely that’s the point… when you’re going through school, you feel as though every tiny thing that does happen is explosive and seismic but it isn’t.

Not as good as Rodham or An American Wife
