So I kept waiting and waiting for the main character to change, to learn a lesson, to grow up...

It was almost painful to listen to because of how true it probably is (not about prep school) but the internal dialog of an unsure and insecure teenage girl.

This book. THIS BOOK. I just can’t. Curtis Sittenfeld is a master. To live inside Lee Fiora’s head is excruciating, and the thoughts she thinks are heartbreaking and they are real. The pain of being a shy, ashamed high school girl are on full display. And man, pain is the word. Not easy to read, but still a page turner. Definitely up there on the favorites shelf for me. So glad to have had the experience of reading, but grateful that I never have to go back to being a girl in high school!

7/9/2022: Still the greatest!

12/27/2020: This is my new favorite book. It took me a while to get into it, but after about 100 pages, I finished in one sitting. There are many, many intricacies of boarding school life that are portrayed so accurately.

This book hurt to read, mainly because of the vivid memories it brought up from my own high school years. Sittenfeld does a fantastic job at capturing the awkwardness and self-involvement of being a young teenager. At times I despised Lee Fiora, feeling constantly aggravated by her self-consciousness and the way it paralyzed her - but I never stopped empathizing with her.
