I couldn't even finish this book. I got bored about halfway through. I loved Nikolai but Alina and Mal irritated me.

The "does he? doesn't he?" romance in this book absolutely RUINED it for me. So many issues and weak plot points could have been solved with mere conversation. I know most middle books in trilogys are weak but man... this one was rough.

If it didn't have Nikolai, I would only give this book two stars. But it has Nikolai so four stars.

The beginning was kinda rough/boring, but it did pick up more steam around the time Alina decided to become an interesting character.

Wooh okay second book, done!
I liked Alina more than in the first book. Her inner dialogue being more about her struggles with coming into her power and confronting her own shadows/darker side (okay it wasn't that deep) was kinda interesting and made me less annoyed with being inside her head. That said, Mal is someone I feel keeps her back a lot from growing into who she is. I need more of Alina and Genya just hanging out instead ;o
Nikolai was a new character I was pleasantly surprised with. I think he was a nice addition to the cast and brought out some new sides of Alina. I think he is my favorite so far, even though I can't say I really know him that well yet.
I liked this one more than the first one, and I'm excited to find out what the last book has in store. (that ending though)

First 70-80 pages were incredible! Packed with adventure and great introduction to the new characters while providing different sceneries. Then it slowly became worse, CONSTANTLY, up until the last 50 pages which were nail biting and worth the build up
