This is a wonderfully charming book. Fun to read, interesting, and very uplifting.
Narrated in a light, upbeat style that somehow described heavy subjects without making light of them.

I loved this book! And now I want to start talking like a 1940's English girl, where things are "smashing" and you should just "crack on" with things.
Emmeline Lake and her best friend, Bunty, live in London during World War Two. Emmy gets a job at a magazine, where she helps Mrs Bird with her advice column, but when Mrs Bird refuses to address any of the significant problems, Emmy takes matters into her own hands. This is a gentle, sweet, amusing, and moving story, addressing the harsh realities of life in London during the war. For fans of The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society, it is uplifting, quietly romantic, with a focus on kindness and friendship.
Light and forgettable. Which is sometimes just what is needed.
Just not in the mood for characters who have nothing better to talk about than who they will marry.
Women at war .. or at least WWII .. and what they experienced to 'keep the home fires burning' as seen through the words of the letters to the 'Dear Mrs Bird' in a Women's Magazines. An interesting premise and for the most part successful.
The apotheosis of the war story experiences seems to be gathering momentum .. writing by modern day authors researching the past is valid and also engaging but it can be problematic when thinking that as readers we are stepping into the lives of people of the time ... our reading can only bring our modern sensibilities when reading, and writing, historical fiction .. and this story, based in research and framed around real lives, is still fiction.
Enjoy the step back, whato.. where tea and sympathy abound, love, loss .. someone will get biffed by Hitler .. and the possibilities of how women lived, managed, flourished and fought is a good read.
