I was really intrigued by the premise but unfortunately the writing just did not do it for me. The main character felt really childish for a 23 year old during WW2 and I can't deny that it was really cringy at times. I guess this book delivered in the fact that it was really predictable with a nice over arching theme of friendship in the times of hardships so it could be seen as heartwarming but... . .... The characters felt shallow and a little but annoying and the plot is just eh.

So charming!

very lovely, i cried at the end

This book was grand! At the end I laughed out loud several times, and cried from joy. The author did a stupendous job of applying emotion.

Emmeline (Emmy) Lake is bound and determined to be a war correspondent, but when she takes a position at a magazine in London it is rather different than expected. She is put in the unenviable position of writing up the responses for Mrs. Henrietta Bird, editress, bully and stuck in the past sort of columnist. Between Emmy's other voluntary job taking calls at a fire station, she feels the need to reach out to the individuals who reach out to Mrs. Bird in a more supportive way, as they are coping with all manner of aspects of living during WWII in London.

I admire Emmy's pluck and determination, but it all seemed a bit forced. I thought the second part of the book after she is out and about during a bombing that hits where she was headed and changes the course of her life was a bit more interesting. Still, I think I was hoping for more.
