This story didn’t capture me like I was expecting, though it clearly has for many people (4.27 rating currently). Not enough happens through most of the story, then the conflict arises too late and is resolved too fast. In a rare case, the movie is actually better because of the imagination Miyazaki manages to imbue it with. Still, I found the story far too convoluted, especially for a children’s book.

The movie has a very special place in my heart but this book is very different. I think both are masterpieces in storytelling. Just slightly different stories. Love this author and love this world and characters. Also as a mom of boys (Jones was also a mom of boys) I could really relate to Sophie dealing with Howl haha.

I adore Sophie and her practical, no-nonsense way of getting about things, even when life seems to knock her down. She isn’t the perfect Mary-Sue character and freely admits that she’s timid, shy and not very good at thinking things through! But her attitude in facing things that have been messed up is admirable.

I’d recommend this story for any young child and adult who wants to escape into a fantasy world that isn’t too detailed and confusing, but also isn’t a simple fairytale land.
