I couldn't wait to finish this book, it was long, brutal and for me boring for most of it. There were so many characters, so many details.

Charles Manson, as we know, was one twisted, demented mofo who had no place on this Earth, How da faq did he get here??? It amazes me how smart crazy can actually be. What I hate most about Charles Manson is that he was allowed to breathe air so long - these henious crimes were commited August 1969 and that bastard got to breathe air until November 2017 - NOT FAIR!

The LAPD made SO many mistakes with this case that the entire department should had been fired! The details are riveting. I feel author Vincent Bugliosi (prosecutor of Charles Manson) did a good job detailing the accounts of the investigation, arrest and prosecution of the 'Mansons'

A horrifying read. But well told.
dark emotional informative sad medium-paced
challenging dark informative slow-paced

Very in-depth look at not only The Family, but also the court cases that followed.

True crime is just not my thing, I think. I put this book down for about a week during the middle of the court part because I was bored. Don't get me wrong, the author talks about the courtroom shenanigans but, when it comes to true crime, I want to know the why, not so much the how. This book is all how. After introducing the Tate and Labianca murders, the author introduces himself and thereafter it's all about how he was assigned the case, how he investigated it, how he thought of everything (everything!) during the case, etc.
I get it bro, you are a sweet prosecutor, but damn does the author throw everyone else under the bus.
And we really only get some "whys" answered during a small segment where the author relates the testimony of a few psychologists.
I did enjoy the bit where he puts together the motive though, Charles Manson sounds a bit like I do when I am on cold medicine and three minutes away from passing out and the husband decides to play Muse. The only thing is, I fall asleep before I preach to other people about how Muse is telling us to overthrow the bush administration and the reptilian world leaders. Charles Manson, high on cold medicine his entire life. Am I convinced? I don't know, I am amused though.

Also, Squeaky is one of the craziest bitches to ever live. How the hell did she get parole? Can we talk about that?

I want to understand how cultures bind themselves together. Specifically, I'm interested in the tribulations that countercultures face in surviving over time, and why so many degrade into cults. This “true crime” story by the Manson Family prosecutor Vincent Bugliosi satisfied none of my curiosities. The only thing I gained was a sense of the normative understanding of the Tate-LaBianca murders and court proceedings. Very little about the Manson Family practices or beliefs were explored.

I’m not saying Manson is innocent, but I inherently distrust prosecutors and should have known better than to read a book by one. I hear that more recent histories of the Manson Family actually critique the “Helter Skelter” narrative as their starting point, so maybe I’ll be better equipped to read one of those someday if I care enough.

Not Recommended.

Insane that this happened. How tf can someone kill a person and reason that they’re doing it out of love?

very well written and ties up the cultural loose ends I did't understand from childhood.
