Lots of loose threads and blind alleys to this thriller/whodunnit which leave you guessing all the way through until they’re tied up neatly at the end.

The Break-in by Katherine Faulkner is set in London where Alice lives with her husband and daughter in an expensive neighbourhood. One day, during a play date, a man breaks in and, fearing he is a danger to her daughter, she ends up killing him and what follows is a story full of twists and turns.
This is a fast paced novel which deals with the guilt felt after a split second decision goes wrong. I did feel some of the story was a little farfetched but nevertheless I enjoyed it. There is enough to keep you guessing without being dragged out.

Wealthy mother Alice is having a playdate with her daughter Martha. When an intruder breaks in who seemed to be high on drugs and alcohol and grabs a knife. Alice picks up a stool to defend her family and hits him. Which kills him instantly. She gets away with it by self- defence. But she feels guilty. Things about the break in doesn’t add up and she goes about finding out the truth of what happened that day and the intruder and what led it up to the break in.
I thank Raven books for winning a copy of the break-in by Kathern Faulkner. She is a new author for me. And I though the premise was ‘just up my street’.
I liked the premise of the story, and I thought it well plotted storyline. It had me engrossed from the very first page. There is a lot going on in this story and characters to take note of but, unfortunately, I didn’t warm to any. The author did a good job of tided everything up regarding each character until the end. I did enjoy the most part of this story, but I found the last quarter of the book slightly repetitive and a tad overwhelming. 3.5 stars from me.

I loved the Break In. It's a whip smart, twisty and tense domestic noir. I was completely engrossed and couldn't put it down.
I was instantly intrigued by the synopsis - a play date gone wrong, a mother protecting her child and an intruder dead, but in the aftermath, not everything is as it seems.
The tension is cloying and parts had me curling my toes while inwardly screaming "noooo, what are you doing?!"
I enjoyed the way the story is told from various perspectives and timelines which adds to the mystery, because you don't know whose recollection is accurate. What is going on?! It's totally unpredictable and as the story unravels I felt more and more blindsided.
The ending is really satisfying and shocking. I thought I had it all figured out - but then all the little threads are very neatly tied up, and it makes perfect sense.
A brilliant read, highly recommended.
