The writing is solid but the plot and characters…the ENDING???…be so mf for REALLL I was so sad bc I wanted to like this and I wanted so much more from this than what was actually delivered. I almost don’t want to give it one star but the climax (if one could call it that) made me truly believe I spent all this time reading for nothing. And this is my first review of 24. Tight.

The definition of weird girl fiction the author seems to set out on a journey of exploring motherhood and self identity with the main character in the throes of some existential crisis, seriously questioning her happiness with accepting the role of wife, mother and stay at home partner. Yearning for more despite existing within privilege already. This book had a lot of room to be a stalwart commentary on capitalism, society, cults on gentrification even but it falls short with a very out of the blue unexplained ending. Where (spoiler) the main character transforms herself into the role of a cult leader despite never showing any of the magnetic qualities of one? Instead of falling into the cult she becomes it? I’m yet to understand the meaning behind that. Not a waste of time to read and I’m glad I read this before motherthing which is meant to be considerably better!
I found the parallels of motherhood to sex work very interesting. overall, very thought-provoking and somewhat a good satire on womanhood and women's roles but it just came across as very "woo white girlboss feminism" that I had to roll my eyes...like was the main character so disillusioned bc of her societal status OR was she an unreliable narrator OR was it all just satire? I couldn't tell and I got bored trying to figure it out...anyways sex work is a bad thing where no woman could ever possibly win and so is being a mother amen
2.5- this had so much potential, but it didn’t take things far enough and was bogged down with too many descriptors. Give me more plot, pls! The writing is so unique that I’ll probably still read the next book.
