Really well-written academic work: very well referenced, beautifully clear prose and a lot of respect for what the reader knows, and doesn't. Am recommending to all first-year anthropology students!

Luhrmann went to great lengths to make this collection of essays easy to read and ya know I really appreciate that

Often discussion of gods/spirits focus on if one thinks they are real, what that means for their daily life. T.M. Luhrmann's book, instead asks what makes people see/feel gods/spirits.

While very academic, Luhrmann uses insightful case studies to illuminate how people come to 'know' their god. I was particularly interested in the first half of the book, about how certain spiritual practices increase the possibility of one seeing/feeling their gods.

For anyone intrigued by how people of faith understand their gods, Luhrmann's text is a fascinating one and a must read.
