Good story, but the ending was very abrupt. What happened to the bad guy??
Was there an apology? Those in charge were very gullible. Might try one more in the series.

fast-paced
A troubled hero for sure, but there was nothing actually likeable about him. The character development in this this one was minimal so I found I didn't care much.
This book has gotten a lot of 4 and 5 star reviews and the only thing I can come up with is that these readers have not read JD Kirk’s DCI Logan series or David Gatward’s (even with the 80 cups of tea) DCI Grimm series.
Like many others have said this book has all the makings of a good crime but somehow it’s a complete disaster. If DCI Bone isn’t spending his time taking tantrums he is playing a caricature of a bad cop while interviewing suspects, it’s cringeworthy reading. The supporting cast of characters aren’t much better. Needless to say this will be the first and the last book I will read by this particular author.

A so-so mystery. The characters do go particularly deep, and Bone, despite the trauma indicated that sent him on leave, and broke up his marriage, presents at a more superficial level than I would like. I’ll try the second in the series, in hopes it’s better.
Absolutely brilliant, I loved this. DCI Bone has been off work for a prolonged period following his involvement in the gruesome Peek a boo case which left him physically and mentally damaged. When a, seemingly, copy cat killer murders a cop and sends a video of it to Bone, he is unavoidably drawn back into work and to face his worst nightmares.
The backdrop is Scotland and the language and culture adds another, excellent and compelling depth to the storyline, in my opinion. The characters are superbly crafted and very engaging and there is just the right level of dark humour alongside the gruesome parts.
The story itself is fast paced, utterly captivating and twisty and I read the whole thing in a day as I was enjoying it so much. Actually a bit gutted that I’ve finished, am going to look up other titles by the author.

AUDIOBOOK
I think I have found a new series of exciting audios to get stuck into. I loved this serial killer audio and it had great narration from Steve Worsley as well. DCI Bone and can’t wait to see what happens next in his story. In this audio he is called to investigate what it seems is a copycat killer trying to replicate the work of the man that almost killed DCI Bones. As more innocent people are taken it’s a race against time to find out who’s responsible before it’s too late. Edge of your seat stuff

The quality of writing is not great. I didn’t like the protagonist Duncan Bone. I understand that the press can be irritating, but they also don’t want to completely antagonize cops since the police are a great source of information, and often the media can be used to help police find missing people or bad guys. But in Bones’ world, all media are terrible, and most other people, including those in his line of work, are also mere obstacles in his way as he’s determined to save the day. I understand he suffers from PTSD from nearly dying in an explosion, but he lashes out very quickly in a way that’s not acceptable for a man in his position. I made it through the book, but only because I forced myself to do so.
