"Scottish Prison service is about as efficient as a Scotrail Trolley Service"

As a Scot who has read a lot of Scottish police procedurals and tartan noir crime books in my lifetime, it takes something quite original to keep my interest piqued for the entirety of a novel. Dark Is The Grave managed to do just that.

The humour is SO GOOD - a lot of it is on point for Scottish readers and I really appreciated that!

The main detective, Bone, is a typical but just-as-we-like-them Scottish antihero. He merges rulebreaking and a passion for catching the culprit and keeping his team and loved ones safe in perfect harmony.

After being on leave due to severe trauma that happened at the end of the investigation to catch the elusive "peek-a-boo" killer, Bone is thrust back into a hauntingly similar investigation and is faced with a race against the clock to get to the bottom of things before his PTSD gets the better of him. Absolutely compelling.

This novel gripped me from about chapter 2 right until the last moment- and I DIDN'T SEE THE KILLER COMING which is a rarity for me.

Both myself and my mum who coincidentally bought and read this on kindle yesterday give this book five stars!

🪦 #BookReview - Dark Is The Grave 🪦

⭐️⭐️⭐️
[AD/GIFT] Thank you to @lovebookstours for gifting me a copy of Dark Is The Grave for this book tour!

The first in a new crime series, Dark Is The Grave is a juicy page turned and had me guessing at who the culprit was from the beginning. Set in Scotland, we see Bone attempt to salvage his grip on the new case whilst dealing with PTSD from a gruesome set of murders that have now inspired a copy cat.

I thought this was an excellent start to a series and I’ll be excited to see where Bone and his team are lead next. It’s filled with likeable characters that have relatable personalities and plenty of action. I really appreciated the sensitivity with which Bone’s PTSD was portrayed - I thought it was written with care. I also appreciated the humour that Bone’s colleagues brought to a serious case and plot! ☺️

If crime thrillers are your thing and you love discovering new series, this may be the next baby for you to dive into.

#1 DCI Bone a Scottish crime thriller

Duncan Bone sustained serious injuries during his last case and is struggling with rehab, during which time his marriage has broken down. He is trying to see more of his son Michael.
He is finally drawn back to work on the emergence of a copycat cat of the peek a boo murders where serving police officers are brutally murdered.
Along the way he makes powerful enemies.

Although it’s Scottish there isn’t a lot of Scottish dialect, so it’s easy to read.
Both Mullens and his dads antics made me chuckle.  It has some real laugh out loud moments as well as an avalanche of gentler humorous quips
It has likeable characters, evil antagonists, a good pace, humour and an action packed ending.

I loved this book and highly recommend it.
