Interesting to read this with some proficiency in the source texts. The book seems increasingly exhausted by itself and its subject as it wears on, as though subsequent battles with cancer warrant less exploration, less attention. Author's approach to queerness is better than most but at times still lacks, especially around the nature of AIDS in NYC.

LOVING this book that I got for Christmas.
There is so much here I did not know--Moser's observations of Sontag's early childhood are gold, and his understanding and contextualization of her incredible achievements in various forms is detailed and insightful. Sontag's unprecedented success and style, fearlessness in the face of war and censorship are documented, as are her diva-induced missteps. For me, the queer theory closing sections are heartbreaking and some of the best biographical writing I have ever read.
This book tells the story of Susan Sontag, who will likely never return. I find the book flat-out life-changing and inspiring. The book makes me want to read more--a lot more!
More than a simple author biography, Moser's Sontag is a complete picture of women I thought I knew pretty well but had no idea. Eye-opening, reveling, inspiring, strongly recommended for the fans of literary biography, twentieth-century art, and just about anything bookish.

"Когда тебе что-то не нравится, иди в свою комнату и читай" -- говорила мать совсем ещё юной Сьюзан, тогда ещё даже не Зонтаг. Совершенно точно могу сказать, что именно таким образом можно вобрать в себя то, что потом будут называть "врождённой грамотностью" (если мнение Пинкера по этому поводу недостаточно убедительно). Возможно, таким образом можно прийти к выводу, что сон важнее яви, любое путешествие можно совершить, не выходя из дома (но тогда, согласно Зонтаг, о нём нельзя будет писать и говорить), и приобрести склонность приукрашивать действительность ради достижения драматического эффекта. Но это совершенно точно не поможет стать одним из самых значимых мыслителей и писателей-эссеистов своего времени. Для этого нужно что-то другое.
Нужен характер. Такой, чтобы после твоей смерти мнения разделились на три лагеря -- ненавидящих тебя, боготворящих тебя, и самый главный -- сообщающий, что никакого тебя не было.
Нужен взгляд. Такой, который позволит ничего не интерпретировать совсем, или воздержаться от интерпретаций хотя бы на время первого пристального ознакомления, пока формируется личное впечатление.
Нужно принимать решения. В том числе и неверные.
Нужно опасаться метафор, в том числе худших из них -- тех, при помощи которых модифицируется реальность. Ведь мир состоит из слов.
Можно ещё бегать от биографов. Потому что тут не избежать ни метафор, ни интерпретаций.
Но, пожалуй, главное -- нужно писать и читать.

I didn't even know I liked biographies before this!!! Couldn't put it down. I wish Susan Sontag could've called me an idiot, I think her brand of cruelty would change my life

This is a brilliantly researched and written book on a fascinating woman. I was intranced.
